Adherence

Coating Adhesion (Pull-Off)

A test "bearing" is attached to the coating using an adhesive. The equipment houses a spring configuration that applies a lifting force to the "bearing" as tension increases.

When the coating is peeled off the surface, a scale indicator shows the numerical value of adhesion expressed in terms of force per unit area required to separate the "resistor".

An inspection of the "suffering" face is required to determine the failure mode.

Inspection Standards:

ASTM C1583

ASTM D4541

ASTM D7234

Holiday Detector (15 Kv)

High-voltage technique: The high-voltage technique, or porosity technique, can be used to test coatings up to 25 mm (1") thick, making it ideal for inspecting pipes and other types of linings. Coatings over concrete can also be tested using this method. A power supply generates a high DC voltage that is delivered to a probe. When the probe is passed over the defect, a spark is generated at the point of contact, triggering an alarm.

The pulsed DC flaw detector is designed to ensure that energy is contained in very short pulses, so each pulse has more energy than an equivalent continuous DC system. This means the flaw detector can be used to check for defects in slightly conductive coatings or on dirty or wet surfaces.

Wet Sponge - Pin Hole (up to 63V)

Wet sponge technique: A low voltage is applied to a moistened sponge. When the sponge is moved over a coating imperfection, liquid penetrates the substrate, completing an electrical circuit that triggers an alarm. Suitable for measuring insulating coatings less than 500 μm (20 mils) thick on conductive substrates, the wet sponge technique is ideal for powder coatings and any thin coating that the user does not wish to damage.
